THE COMPANY

The Company

Hilo Rojo Teatro is an international theatre company based in Seville and in residence at the ATALAYA – TNT International Centre for Theatre Research. We are an independent company; we believe in theatre as a commitment and as an instrument of change for both the individual and society. We strive every day to maintain our vital space for creation, freedom and training. Hilo Rojo was founded in 2017 following the meeting between Riccardo Benfatto and Giulia Esposito during the International Actor’s Workshop run by the Atalaya company and the ATALAYA – TNT International Centre for Theatre Research, where they had the opportunity to work with masters from the Odin Teatret, the Japanese Butoh theatre tradition, Peru, Bolivia and India. Furthermore, both are students of Claudia Contin Arlecchino and Ferruccio Merisi at the “Scuola Sperimentale dell’attore” in Pordenone, Italy. Hilo Rojo creates and develops its shows through a combination of multiple artistic languages such as physical theatre, music, singing and mask work, drawing inspiration from new contemporary authors to create original dramaturgy. Their first production is Plancton – Stories of Wanderers, directed by actor and director Joaquín Galán and featuring actor and musician Santiago Rivera Hernández (winner of the 2022 Lorca Award for Best Male Performer). It premiered at the FeSt in Seville and took part in the III CINTA, and, in addition to having toured several autonomous communities, has taken part in the 25th ScenArte Festival in Rome, Italy. The company’s second production is “Tras la máscara” (Behind the Mask), an educational show about the Commedia dell’Arte, which premiered at the First International Commedia dell’Arte Festival in Seville and, in addition to being performed in Andalusia, took part in the Vinterscenen 2020 Festival in Porsgrunn, Norway. Viva is the company’s third production, created in collaboration with Grenland Friteater; the show’s preview was presented at Vinterscenen 2020 in Norway, it premiered in November 2020 at the 5th CINTA festival, and it took part in the “Ni una menos” cycle in Seville. The company’s latest production is Ejercicios de fantasía, an educational show for children based on the work of the writer Gianni Rodari.

The company develops training projects for the performing arts with a focus on contemporary international theatre and research, such as the Ruido y silencio workshop organised in Seville in November 2019 with the Norwegian company Grenland Friteater. Through its cultural association Pantagruel, it also runs theatre workshops with groups at risk of exclusion and with older people; most recently, it took part in the large-scale community theatre event of the international Mundo Magallanes project, developed by the Atalaya Centre – TNT and the European Union in October 2020.
